What's The Difference Between Antique Longcase, Tallcase And Grandfather Clocks?

Because three different terms are used to identify these antique clocks you may think these are three distinctly different timepieces. In actuality these are all the same kind of antique clock: a tall, freestanding clock driven by weights attached to a pendulum.

How Did Antique Grandfather Clocks Get Their Name?

There is no single accepted theory as to why antique longcase clocks are called grandfather clocks. Some say antique grandfather clocks get their name from an 1876 song called “My Grandfather's Clock.” Others debate this story saying the term “grandfather clock” was in use well before the 1870s. Whatever the origin of the name, longcase, tallcase and grandfather clocks have been popular since the style was first introduced in the late 1600s.

How Antique Grandfather Clocks Work

For as incredibly accurate as antique longcase clocks are, the concept behind the mechanism that powers them is fairly simple. In essence, a pendulum swings back and forth aided by gravity. As it swings, weights drop in pre-set intervals. This, in turn, moves the clock's hands. It is said that antique tallcase clocks can maintain time so accurately that it loses no more than one minute per month if not adjusted.

Parts Of An Antique Longcase Clock

When shopping for antique tallcase or grandfather clocks, a knowledge of basic terms will prove helpful. The “pendulum” is, of course, the swinging arm of the antique grandfather clock. The round disk at the end of the pendulum is called a “bob.” “Cables” are the lines holding the weights. The “pediment” is the carved molding sitting atop the antique longcase clock, and the “case” is the cabinet housing the mechanism. A “moon dial” is sometimes found above the clock face on antique grandfather clocks, and it shows the moon's phases.
